Owners of certain 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra trucks equipped with 4.3L or 5.3L engines, may experience an illuminated “check engine warning light” when the vehicle is idling in cold temperatures. GM has reported that approximately 300,000 full size pickups are at risk of fire because of the problem and are asking owners to not leave their trucks unattended while idling, until repairs can be made.

According to the recall report, some of the exhaust components could overheat when the vehicle is idling in cold temperatures. If this occurs, the “Check Engine” light will illuminate and an “Engine Power is Reduced” message will appear in the Driver Information Center (DIC). If there is enough heat, plastic parts could melt, resulting in a possible engine fire.

GM will be asking owners to take their vehicles to a manufacturer approved repair facility to have the engine control module reprogrammed. For more information about the problem, owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC at 1-800-462-8782. The General Motors recall number is 14008 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-007.
