Automatic Transmission Failure In Certain Chrysler & Dodge Vehicles

Chrysler Group LLC have filed a defect and noncompliance report with the NHTSA for a safety defect found in certain 2013 Chrysler 300, 2013 Dodge Charger, and 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 cars and trucks. The vehicles affected are equipped with ZF all wheel drive (AWD) 8HP45 transmissions.

According to the recall report filed with the NHTSA, the transmission output shaft could develop cracks during the forging process which may grow with subsequent heat treatment. Drivers could experience a fracture of the shaft, resulting in loss of motive power and possible unintended vehicle movement after exiting.

As of November 19, 2013 Chrysler is unaware of any accidents or injuries caused by the problem, but here have been approximately 30 related field reports.

Chrysler will notify owners beginning in January 2014, and dealers will inspect and replace the transmissions, as necessary. The NHTSA campaign number is 13V-610 and Chrysler’s recall number is N65. Owners wanting more information about the problem can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
