QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN BUYING A USED CAR

  • 1. Find out how long the owner has been trying to sell the car. Clearly the longer that the car has been on the market the more negotiable the price.

  • 2. Ask whether the seller is the original owner and why he is selling the car.

  • 3. Always ask what the bottom-line prices is not just the asking price. Ask whether the price is negotiable particularly if you appear to be a serious potential buyer.

  • 4. Ask if the seller has the Certificate of Title. Otherwise find that who does and what money is still owed on the vehicle. This is an important question because if someone else holds title it may be difficult obtain the clear title without liens.

  • 5. Instead of asking the selling price of the car asked what price the owner needs and whether he would consider selling the car at a lesser price.

  • 6. Ask if the seller will agree to have your mechanic inspect the car and if he will agree to allow you to deduct the cost of inspection from the sales price.

  • 7. Find out whether the owner has the recent service records and repair orders.

  • 8. Ask if there is anything wrong with the car not just what condition it is in.

  • 9. Find out whether the car had been in any accidents. Look around and check for rust or any other signs of recent paint.

  • 10. Check out the tires and ask when they were last replaced. Also ask whether there any warranties that came with the new tires.

  • 11. Ask if the seller will pay for a tune-up, or at least pay half the cost of a tune-up.

  • 12. You may know the answer beforehand, but ask anyway as to the Kelley Blue Book retail and wholesale value.
