Certified Pre Owned Warranty - California Lemon Law

Buying or leasing a pre-owned vehicle which has been certified under a manufacturer's certified pre-owned (CPO ) warranty program provides many of the same benefits as buying or leasing a new car.


You have to make sure, however, that the vehicle is covered under a factory certified program and not simply a dealer certified program. The manufacturer CPO program usually requires a higher standard of inspection and repairs to be made before thevehicle can qualify. Also CPO vehicles covered under manufacturers' programs may later be repaired at any authorized dealership or repair facility. Dealership backed programs, on the other hand, usually require that the vehicle must be brought back to the selling dealer for repairs.


Purely from a California lemon law standpoint, a manufacturer's CPO certificate not only extends the mileage and number of years of warranty coverage, as described in the following chart, but also provides a stronger case for repurchase by the manufacturer if the vehicle is later discovered to have a substantial manufacturing defect which cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts.


Note too that the CPO programs summarized in the following chart are subject to change by the manufacturer and you should obtain a written copy of the CPO program which fully describes the time and mileage limits, as well as other details, and demand explanations for those items which are not clear to you.
