General Motors have decided that a defect affecting vehicle safety exists in certain Hankook tires installed as original equipment on some 2021-2022 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles.

In July 2021, GM’s Speak Up For Safety program received information that two tires, received through GM warranty return, had suffered delamination. In June, the owner of a 2021 GMC Terrain brought their vehicle to a GM dealer with complaints of vibration and thumping noises while driving. The dealership noted that the owner had a previous issue with a tire on a road trip that resulted in tire replacement. Both tires were shipped to the supplier. GM became aware of a third tire potentially related to this condition in July. All three tires were from DOT number 0521. GM initiated a yard hold and sort for vehicles equipped with tires from that DOT number. Through testing Hankook determined that the delamination was caused by an insufficient amount of curative agent in a particular batch of rubber. In July Hankook informed GM that they intended to issue a tire recall. GM is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this condition and have decided to conduct a safety recall.

Delamination of tread may occur at high speeds. The tire will likely not deflate or burst, but the tread separation might compromise vehicle handling and/or cause a crash. Warning signs that your tires are delaminated include noise or feel vibration while driving and/or a bulge in the tread may also be noticeable.

Dealers will inspect the tire DOT numbers and replace any affected tires. GM’s number for this recall is N212343560 and the NHTSA campaign number is 21V-612.

General Motors has decided that a software defect exists in certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet 6500HD trucks. These vehicles have been manufactured with tires that have a maximum speed rating of 75mph (regular production option (RPO) codes XDV for the front tires and YAP for the rear tires) and engine control module software that limits the speed of the vehicle to 79 mph.

In December 2020, Navistar, informed GM that vehicles may have been built with maximum speed limitation calibrations that exceed tire maximum speed ratings. A GM engineering manager reported the issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program and preliminary information was collected regarding the issue. GM opened an investigation in February 2021, confirmed the speed limiting software in the ECM and the body control module (BCM) would allow vehicles to reach 79 mph, exceeding the 75 mph maximum speed rating of the tires. In May 2021, GM’s Safety and Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall.

Owners receiving notification letters will be asked to return to their dealers to have the software calibration for the engine control module (ECM) set to limit the vehicles speed so it will not exceed the speed rating of the tires. GM’s number for this recall is N202325530 and the NHTSA campaign number is 21V-346.

General Mortors has decided that a defect affecting vehicle safety exists in some tires installed as original equipment on certain 2018-2021 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs.

According to the tire manufacturer, Continental Tires the Americas (CTA), the tires may have been over-cured and could experience an unexpected break in the sidewall. This break could lead to sudden loss of pressure or a belt edge separation that could lead to partial or full tread / belt loss. The problem could increase the risk of loss of vehicle control.

Vehicles Affected Include
2020 Buick Enclave
2020 Cadillac Escalade
2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV
2020 Cadillac XT4
2020 Cadillac XT5

GM will notify owners and dealers will inspect and replace tires as necessary. The recall is expected to begin April 12, 2021. GM’s number for this recall is N212329050 and the NHTSA campaign number is 21V-115. Approximately 34,000 vehicles are affected.

The owners of certain 2020-2021 General Motors, Nissan and Volkswagen vehicles will be contacted by the automobile manufacturer regarding a problem that could exist with their tires. Continental Tires of America (CTA) have initiated a recall for tires that may have been installed as original equipment on some models.

According to CTA, over-cured tires could experience a break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation that could lead to partial or full tread/belt loss. These conditions could increase the risk of an accident.

Chrysler will be contacting certain 2017 Fiat 500X owners about a safety problem affecting their vehicles. According to the defect report, the low tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light may not illuminate under certain circumstances. Driving on under inflated tires could result in reduced vehicle handling and in rare cases, the potential for complete tire failure.

Dealers will correct the problem by updating the instrument panel software. The recall is expected to begin April 21, 2017. Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler’s number for this recall is T16 and the NHTSA campaign number is 17V-146.

The owners of certain 2017 Maserati Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte cars will be contacted by the manufacturer regarding problems affecting the power train, tires, and backup camera.

Power Train Problems: Certain 2017 Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles manufactured July 1, 2016, to October 12, 2016, may have been built with a rear differential pinion nut that was not torqued to the proper specifications. A loose pinion gear could bind, possibly resulting in the rear wheels locking up while driving. Maserati’s number for this recall is 328 and the NHTSA campaign number is 16V-856. Continue reading

A recent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation shows that the way tires are currently registered and recalled is ineffective and is putting drivers and their passengers at risk. The NTSB opened an investigation into the problem after four tire related accidents in Florida, Louisiana, Arizona and California killed 12 people and injured 42 others. According to the NTSB over 500 people are killed and 19,000 others are injured every year in tire-related accidents and they are asking the NHTSA to implement a mandatory registration system.
