Hyundai will be contacting the owners of certain 2013-2014 Genesis Coupes about a safety defect affecting their vehicles power train. According to reports filed with the NHTSA, the differential and suspension rear cross member may have not been properly aligned during assembly. The bolts that secure the differential could loosen and the drive shaft may disconnect from the differential. Loss of propulsion could increase the chance of an accident. Continue reading

An insufficient seal of the rear lamp assemblies of some 2015 Hyundai Genesis cars will have 24,400 owners returning to their dealership for repairs. According to the defect report on the NHTSA website, water entering the rear combination lamp assemblies could affect the range switch signals of the transmission. If this occurs while the vehicle is stopped and the shifter is moved from park to reverse or drive, or if it is moved from drive to reverse or park, drivers could experience:

  • an incorrect gear displayed on the instrument panel
  • illumination of the malfunction Indicator Lamp
  • a delay in the engagement of the selected gear

An incorrect gear indication could result in the vehicle moving in an unintended direction increasing the chances of an accident. Continue reading

Hyundai will be asking the owners of certain 2011 Equus and 20092011 Genesis cars to return their vehicles to a manufacturer approved repair facility for a safety problem affecting the braking system. According to reports filed with the NHTSA website, diode failure within the stop lamp circuit could result in the lights becoming inoperative. If the stop lamps are not working, a following vehicle may not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping, increasing the chance of a rear end crash. Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Hyundai customer service at 1-714-865-3920. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 125 and the NHTSA Campaign number is 14V713.

An increase in warranty claims related to the shift cable in some 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata vehicles has led to an investigation and subsequent recall of certain cars manufactured between December 11, 2009 through May 29, 2014.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, the cable connecting the transmission switch to the vehicle shift lever could become loose and disconnected. Drivers may not be able to move in or out of the “Park” position preventing the vehicle from being started and increasing the chance of unexpected roll away. Continue reading

Certain 2015 Hyundai Sonata vehicles are being recalled by the automobile manufacturer because of a poor connection within the vehicle’s wiring harness. During manufacturing, the pin socket in one of the vehicles main wiring harness could have been slightly deformed affecting the Chassis’ Controller Area Network circuit continuity. The circuit could become intermittent or open, causing the illumination of the instrument cluster’s indicator lamp, inability to remove the vehicle’s shifter from the park postilion, or a reduction in steering assist. Certain 2011-2014 Hyundai Tucson vehicle may be affected by a manufacturing problem that could lead to the drivers side airbag inadvertently deploying or not deploy at all during an accident.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, during assembly, it is possible that the bolts attaching the driver’s airbag module to the steering wheel assembly were not properly torqued. Over time, the bolts could loosen causing a rattling noise and could eventually detach from the steering wheel completely. There have been no reports of accidents or injury because of the problem. After receiving complaints of decreased brake effectiveness in certain 2009-2012 Genesis Sedans, Hyundai has identified the problem as corrosion in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module.

The subject vehicles may have been filled with a brake fluid with insufficient corrosion inhibitors. Over time, the problem could lead to a gel buildup on the HECU module’s valves resulting in a soft brake pedal and reduced braking effectiveness. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are launching an investigation into certain 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles after two complaints alleging failures of the right front axle shaft. In both instances the failure occurred with less that 5,000 miles on the odometer. The preliminary investigation will determine if the safety problem requires a recall that could affect approximately 50,000 vehicles. Continue reading
