Alternator Failure In Chrysler, Dodge, And Jeep Vehicles

Alternator failure in certain Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles will have 434,581 vehicle owners returning to a manufacturer approved repair facility to have the problem repaired. The safety defect affects vehicles equipped with a 3.6L engine and a 160 Amp Alternator.

In August, 2014, Chrysler opened an investigation into alternator related engine stalls based on warranty data that showed a high number of alternator part returns. The investigation showed indications of fatigue of the alternators’ silicon diodes due to a combination of high operating temperatures and cyclical system load conditions induced by the Electric Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS). Depending on the failure mode and timing, the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Engine Control Module, or a total vehicle electrical system shut down could be experienced.

Chrysler is expected to begin notifying owners of this problem on November 28, 2014. The remedy for this recall campaign is still under development.
