Certain model year 2014 Mazda3 and 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines and a regenerative braking system, could experience a problem that results in an engine stall. Mazda will be contacting approximately 5,700 owners in the United States to take their vehicles in for repairs. (Mazda’s recall number is 7314D and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-173.)

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, driving during heavy rain or through deep puddles could result in the generator belt becoming wet and slipping. The Power Control Module (PCM) could incorrectly determine the slip as a failure of the energy storage capacitor and prohibit the charging system from operating. The charging system warning light will illuminate and the message display will indicate a charging system malfunction. If the driver continues to operate the vehicle under these conditions, they could experience poor acceleration, loss of steering assist, loss of windshield wiper operation, and an eventual engine stall.

Mazda will be notifying owners to take their vehicle to an authorized repair facility to have the (PCM) reprogrammed, free of charge. For more information about the problem, contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.
