Volkswagen will be asking owners of certain 2013-2014 Jetta Hybrid cars to return their vehicles to the nearest VW dealership to have the gearbox oil replaced. Approximately 3,837 cars manufactured between October 2012 to October 2013, and equipped with a DQ- 200 direct shift gearboxes, could experience a sudden loss of power while driving because of this problem.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, these Jetta cars have been filled with a gearbox fluid additive that could, over time, lead to gearbox frame corrosion. If the corrosion deposits collect between electrical wiring it could create a short that could result in blown gearbox fuses and loss of power to the gearbox hydraulic pump. The driver will be immediately alerted through their flashing gear indicator warning lamp on the instrument cluster and the vehicle will lose motive power.

All other vehicle systems, such as the engine, steering, and brakes, etc. will remain unaffected and fully operational.

Owners wanting more information about the problem can contact Volkswagen at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s recall number is 34F6/4V and the NHTSA Campaign Number is 13V-568.
