Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has recently taken action to address a potential problem that may affect certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 trucks and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. The issue involves an unexpected engine stall, which could pose a safety risks to vehicle owners.

In May 2023, the FCA Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization initiated an investigation into certain models manufactured between 2014 and 2019 for Ram 1500 trucks and between 2014 and 2020 for Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. The focus of the investigation was on vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. It was discovered that these particular vehicles had a tone reluctor wheel with an insufficient bond between the magnetic coating and the tone wheel body. Upon analyzing the stall patterns and reviewing vehicle history, it was determined that the affected vehicles were those manufactured with Gen II 3.0L diesel engines, and the crankshaft tone wheel was identified as the source of the stalls.

According to the defect report, the magnetic material attached to the reluctor wheel provides a crucial signal to the crankshaft position sensor. When this signal is lost, the engine’s ability to synchronize injector pulses and cam timing is compromised. Consequently, the loss of the crankshaft position can lead to an engine stall, leaving the vehicle unable to restart.

To address this issue, FCA will be updating the powertrain control module software to ensure that vehicle propulsion is maintained even in the event of a lost crankshaft position signal. By reading the camshaft position signal, the updated software will mitigate the risk of engine stalls.

As part of the recall process, FCA has assigned the number 66A to this specific recall, while the NHTSA campaign number is 23V-411. It is important to note that this recall represents an expansion of a previous recall, namely recall 20V-475.

FCA US will be contacting vehicle owners to ensure that they are informed about the issue and the necessary steps to resolve it. The company is aware of 10 customer assistance records, 611 warranty claims, and three field reports that may be associated with this particular issue.

Chrysler (FCA) has recently made an announcement to the public regarding the recall of certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles. The reason behind the recall is an unexpected engine stall issue that has been identified in some of the vehicles equipped with 5.7L eTorque engines. An engine stall can cause an increased risk of an accident, which can be life-threatening.

FCA’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization initiated an investigation into the matter in January 2023, after receiving several reports regarding the potential stall condition in a 2021 Ram 1500 equipped with the 5.7LeTorque engine. The investigation revealed that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software was the root cause of the stall pattern in the affected vehicles.

The vehicles that were manufactured between June 3, 2020, and September 12, 2021, have been identified to have defective powertrain control module software, which can cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition in the engine and eventually result in an engine stall.

Chrysler is notifying owners to bring their vehicles in for repair. According to the defect report, the company has identified 206 customer records, 636 warranty claims, and 53 field reports related to this issue. This recall is expected to affect a significant number of vehicles, and Chrysler is urging all affected vehicle owners to take immediate action to prevent any potential accidents or harm.

If you are an owner of one of the affected vehicles, you are entitled to a free repair. Under the Lemon Law, manufacturers are required to replace or refund the purchase price of a vehicle that has a recurring defect that cannot be repaired within a reasonable number of attempts. If your vehicle is affected and the repair is not successful, you may be eligible for a refund or replacement under this law.

The affected vehicles will be repaired by updating the Powertrain Control Module calibration software. The recall number for this specific recall is 37A, and the NHTSA campaign number is 23V-265. It is important to act immediately if you are an owner of one of these vehicles to avoid any potential safety risks.

Chrysler will be contacting the owners of certain Ram trucks that are equipped with Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engines, due to a potential fire hazard that may arise from an electrical short in the heater grid relay located in the engine compartment. The issue was brought to the attention of the FCA Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization in October 2022, after the detection of a potential trend of engine compartment fires in vehicles that were built after the recall 21V-798.

According to FCA, there have been six customer assistance records, three warranty claims, and six field reports that may be related to this issue. As a result, the company has identified the potential risks associated with the short circuit and has initiated the recall of affected vehicles to address the issue.

NOTE: Ram truck owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair has been completed to avoid any potential fire hazards. It is important for owners to take this recall seriously and to get their vehicles repaired as soon as possible to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants and nearby property.

The FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is 13A, and the NHTSA campaign number is 23V-060. This recall is an expansion of and supersedes recall number 21V-798.

Fuel Pump Failure (22V-767)
Models Affected: 2020-2022 Jeep Wrangler, Ram 1500, and 2021-2022 Jeep Gladiator vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines.
A high-pressure fuel pump failure could introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system potentially causing the engine to stall due to fuel starvation.


Front Seat Belt Pretensioner Could Fail (22V-766)
Models Affected: 2022 Ram 1500, Jeep Gladiator, and 2021 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.
An incorrectly welded micro gas generator (MGG) may lead to a pretensioner system failure that could fail to restrain an occupant during an accident.


Internal ECM Short May Cause Loss of Power (22V-642)
Models Affected: 2022 Ram 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, Ram 2500, and 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles equipped with Cummins 6.7L turbo diesel engines.
The engine control module (ECM) may have been built with a misaligned capacitor that can short-circuit, resulting in an internal loss of communication.


Rearview Camera Image May Not Display (22V-638)
Models Affected: 2020-2021 Jeep Wrangler, RAM 1500, and 2021 Jeep Gladiator
A software error could prevent the rear view image from displaying. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for rear visibility.


Tail Light Side Marker May Not Illuminate (22V-544)
Models Affected: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles.
The tail light side marker assemblies may be damaged and not illuminated.


The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Battery May Fail Prematurely (22V-504)
Models Affected: 2022 Chrysler 300, 2022 Dodge Challenger, and 2022 Dodge Charger
According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) , all vehicles must be equipped with a tire pressure monitor system that detects”when one or more of a vehicle’s tires is significantly under-inflated and illuminates a low tire pressure warning telltale. The tire pressure system in the suspect vehicles may not detect low tire pressure. If the TPMS light illuminates because the battery in the sensor prematurely discharges, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure.


Vehicle Rollaway Because Of ABS Malfunction (22V-426)
Models Affected: 2018-2019 Dodge Durango, and 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
A malfunctioning antilock-brake system (ABS) module may illuminate the brake lights, and allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.


Rear view Image May Not Display (22V-407)
Models Affected: 2022 Ram 1500, 2500 pickup trucks, and 3500 Cab Chassis vehicles with GVWR less than 10,000 lbs
The radio software may prevent the rear view image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”


High-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure (22V-406)
Models Affected: 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014-2019 RAM 1500
A high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure may introduce internal debris into the fuel system, potentially resulting in fuel starvation.


Stuck EGR Valve May Cause Loss Of Power (22V-284)
Models Affected: 2021 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee WK, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles equipped with 3.6L engines.
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve may stick open, resulting in an unexpected loss of drive power.


Seat May Not Secure Properly (22V-181)
Models Affected: 2021-2022 Pacifica and 2021 Voyager
The second-row seat-to-floor mounting latch may bind and stick open, preventing the seat from properly securing to the floor.


Missing Weld From The Seat Back Frame To The Child Seat Tether Anchorage (22V-180)
Models Affected: 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
These vehicles may have been built with a missing weld from the seat back frame to the child seat tether anchorage. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, “Child Restraint Anchorage Systems.”


Steering Assembly Bar Could Bind (22V-154)
Models Affected: 2021-2022 Dodge Durango and 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.
The steering gear rack bar may have been insufficiently hardened during manufacturing, possibly allowing it to bind within the steering rack. The problem could result in a loss of steering control.


ESC Light May Not Indicate Malfunction (22V-140)
Models Affected: 2021-2022 Dodge Durango, 2019-2022 RAM 2500, and 2019-2022 RAM 2500
An ABS control module software issue could prevent the electronic stability control (ESC) malfunction light from illuminating during certain conditions.


Certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines, could experience high-pressure fuel pump failure. If the pump fails while the vehicle is being operated, drivers will experience an unexpected loss of engine power and an increased chance of an accident.

In February 2022, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization started an investigation into Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 trucks, after receiving field reports that the fuel pump in some vehicles were prematurely failing. An investigation of the stall patterns and vehicle histories showed that the affected trucks were equipped with Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pumps (HPFP).

According to the defect report, a failure inside the fuel pump could introduce internal debris that could build up and cause fuel starvation. Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which could contribute to a vehicle to crash. The suspect period began on June 12, 2013, when 3.0L Diesel engines with suspect HPFPs were introduced into vehicle production, and ended on December 13, 2019, when 3.0L Diesel engines with suspect HPFPs were no longer used in vehicle production.

Warning signs that your vehicle may be experiencing this problem include:
Drivers may notice a Malfunction Indicator Lamp, a service Electronic Throttle Control indicator, a fuel leak at the HPFP, or excessive noise from the HPFP.

FCA US is aware of 215 customer assistance records, 1,061 warranty claims, and three field reports that could be related to this issue.

Owners receiving notices will be asked to return to their dealers to have the HPFP replaced. Dealers will also inspect the entire fuel system and replace components as necessary. FCA’s number for this recall is Z46 and the NHTSA campaign number is 22V-406.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) will be contacting owners of certain Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, and RAM vehicles for a problem affecting the fuel system. In total, approximately 236 000 vehicles are being recalled.

2020-2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles fuel line sensor housing may crack and leak fuel. NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V-878

The problem was traced to September 11, 2020, when defective fuel sensors were introduced into vehicle production, and ended on May 25, 2021, when the fuel sensors from the suspect batches were no longer used. The suspect population was determined using part traceability and vehicle production records.

According to the defect report, a leak in the fuel line sensor may cause fuel starvation of the engine and in rare circumstances, if the leaked fuel comes in contact with an ignition source, a fire could occur. A vehicle fire can result in an increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage. Fuel starvation could also result in an unexpected loss of motive power.

2019 Fiat 124 Spider fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall. NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V-879

The suspect period began on April 6, 2018, when the defective fuel delivery module (FDMs) were introduced into vehicle production, and ended on October 18, 2018, when FDMs with improved molding of the impellers were implemented in vehicle production.

Some 2019 Fiat 124 Spider vehicles may have been manufactured with a fuel delivery module (FDM) with impellers that could deform. An FDM with a deformed impeller may interfere with other fuel pump components which can inhibit the operation of the fuel pump potentially causing fuel starvation. : Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power.

2019-2020 RAM 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 diesel trucks fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V-880

The suspect period began on October 11, 2018, when Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engines with suspect HPFPs were introduced into vehicle production, and ended on November 13, 2020, when Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engines with suspect HPFPs were no longer used in vehicle production.

According to the defect report, the high-pressure fuel pump could fail and introduce debris into the fuel system. Fuel starvation and an unexpected loss of motive power could result without prior warning. Vehicle occupants may notice an illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp, a fuel leak or smell, abnormal engine noises, or a change in drive quality.

The NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) have opened up an investigation into certain 2019-2020 RAM trucks after receiving 22 complaints and 2 field reports alleging incidents of stalling and loss of engine power. The vehicles affected are equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel engines. According to the investigation report, the complaints found that most stall/loss of motive power incident allegations occurred at speeds above 25 MPH and resulted in permanent disablement of the vehicle.

In November 2019, FCA issued Warranty Bulletin D-19-02 to announce to its dealers a Fast Feedback Program wherein they were notified of a campaign to collect, monitor, and correct quality issues on certain 2018-2020 Ram trucks equipped with the 6.7L Cummins engine. As a result of this campaign, high-pressure fuel pumps have been collected and inspected by the manufacturer and pump manufacturer.

ODI is opening this investigation to further assess the scope, frequency, root cause, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect leading to stall/loss of motive power on 2019-2020MY RAM heavy-duty trucks.

Our client purchased a 2016 Ram 1500 and was quite excited.

He had to bring in the vehicle fairly soon after purchasing as the airbag light kept coming on. It first happened at 90 miles, then 93 miles and then at 136 miles. He made a video of the light coming on to show the Ram Dealership. There was also a wind noise coming from the top of the driver door. You could hear this noise more on acceleration. The date of this visit was June 6, 2016.

The next visit was on June 22nd as he was still having the wind noise coming from the top of the driver door. There was also a problem with the center console lid not latching. They also did a software update on the PCM.

Our client was back at the dealership on August 3rd. At that time the driver’s seat would not move backwards all the way. He was also hearing a whistle in the weatherstripping on the driver’s door.

September 12th he was back in due to the air bag message coming on. The check engine light came on the touch screen and the air conditioning turned off. He is disappointed as the vehicle never gets over 23 MPG.

The next visit was on November 20th because while driving the throttle control light came on and the check engine light, too. He could not go over 30 MPH.

The air bag light coming on intermittently is the reason he drove the vehicle to the authorized dealership on January 24, 2018.

It was at the point that he called the Law Office of Barry L. Edzant, a California Lemon Law Attorney with over 30 years experience. During the free consultation, Barry, requested that some documents be emailed to him so he could review them. Soon thereafter our client signed up with our firm. A letter was send to FCA, USA demanding they buy back the vehicle under the California Lemon Law.

FCA, USA agreed to buy back the 2016 Ram 1500. They reimbursed our client for their down payment, all monthly payments, their registration, the payoff on the vehicle minus a mileage deduction allowed under the Lemon Law. FCA, USA also paid the attorney fees.
